Flash Point

Flash point is one of the characteristics used to determine flammability of a petroleum product.Open cup test methods are used to simulate the fire hazards associated with open containers or exposed liquids; closed cup testers are used to simulate closed containers that have been recently opened and thus present a potential hazard.

In both open and closed cup methods a test cup is filled with a petroleum sample, heated and a test flame passed over the sample at predetermined intervals. The lowest temperature at which the liquid ignites is the flashpoint.

The key differences between the various methods are whether the test cup is open or covered, whether stirring is applied and the temperature at which the flash point is expected to occur.
