Cold Behaviour
Cold Behaviour measurement – pour point, cold point, freeze point and cold filter plugging point – are used to determine the flow characteristics of petroleum at low temperatures. These measurements basically define the lowest temperature that the product can be used in the intended application.
Pour point is the temperature at which a petroleum product will no longer flow.
Cloud point is the temperature at which the formation of wax crystals begins to affect the product’s flow characteristics, particularly through small orifices and filters.
Freezing point is a measurement of the lowest temperature at which an aviation fuel will remain free of solid hydrocarbon crystals that could restrict the flow of fuel through filters.
Cold filter plugging point measures the filterability of diesel fuels
Antek
Scientific Testing Equipment
Antek Instruments, was founded in 1967 as a manufacturer’s representative. Developing a pattern that would carry us into the new millennium, we began listening and responding to customer needs by designing and manufacturing custom gas chromatographs in 1968. In 1975 we developed a chemiluminescent detection method for the analysis of chemically bound nitrogen.
Patents were issued in the U.S. and the U.K. in 1977 and 1978. In the 1980s we developed and patented sulfur detection methods and a simultaneous nitrogen/sulfur detection method. Although there have been several generations with significant improvements and interfaces with other technology, the original principles of detection are still used in our nitrogen & sulfur detectors and analysers-laboratory & process/on-line.
We see a future in instrumentation with greater speed, sensitivity and versatility, increased user-friendliness, customisation, automation and reliability, as well as higher levels of customer service and application support.

Automatic Petroleum Testing Equipment
ISL’s beginnings go back to 1975, when a group of engineers and scientists from the heart of the Northern France’s petrochemical industry began seeking ways to automate petroleum testing. The neighboring industry served as an excellent R&D proving ground for their new equipment; and, with several quality instruments developed, the ATPEM trademark was born. The most famous of these new instruments was the CPP97 Automatic Cloud and Pour Point Analyzer. Its successor, the CPP97-6, revolutionized cold flow testing with its introduction in the 1980’s, enabling six tests automatically. This technology continues as the standard in automatic cloud and pour point testing.
Realizing automation was key in all development work, ATPEM introduced several new automatic instruments each year, quickly becoming a worldwide leader in automatic petroleum testing instrumentation. In 1986, they expanded operations, reorganizing into the company now known as ISL.
Experience and the right mix of new talent became ISL’s key to success. With design, marketing, service and support operating together under the ISL roof, we now offer over 20 automatic and automated analysers:
- increase test precision
- eliminate operator subjectivity and human errors
- increase laboratory efficiency and reduce costs
- increase productivity and save operator time
- increase test safety
Striving to maintain close contact with customers in over 50 countries, ISL has since grown, adding four branches. In 1993, ISL reached “a new dimension ” by obtaining ISO 9002 certification from the BVQI. Working hard to extend our quality assurance program, we received ISO 9001 certification in 1995.
Our mission is to provide customers with innovative, user friendly, reliable testing equipment. Designing, developing and producing all equipment in-house, we constantly listen to customer needs, utilizing their input as foundation for product enhancements. A worldwide distribution network supports our customers with quick, efficient service, and our highly knowledgeable service staff buttresses this relationship, providing solutions to product or application challenges.

Originally established in 1931, Herzog has a comprehensive line of laboratory instruments for testing atmospheric and vacuum distillation, flash point, vapor pressure, bitumen properties, cold flow properties, viscosity and other physical properties.
Herzog pioneered efforts to automate traditional manual methods of testing in order to save manpower and eliminate user errors. Herzog also took the lead in efforts to develop and standardize new, alternative lab methods where the hallmarks were low sample volume requirements, achieving faster results, higher precision in analysis and greater ease of use by operators with lower general skill levels.

Reliable and Accurate Small Sample Viscosity Analysis
Cambridge Viscosity (CVI) is a known global leader in small sample viscosity. Reliable and easy to use viscometers with a wide variety of applications are needed both in laboratories and within the process. CVI viscometers provide:
- Highly accurate results
- Reliable operation
- Advanced technology
- Low maintenance
- Excellent performance operation
- Small footprint, requiring only a small sample size
Its innovation, which includes a patented sensor technology, sets it apart from the rest of the industry. This patented, proprietary electromagnetic-based sensor technology utilizes only one moving part, a piston, driven electromagnetically through fluid in a small measurement chamber. A deflector, positioned over the piston, moves fluid into the measurement chamber, while two coils move the piston back and forth at a constant force. Proprietary circuitry analyzes its two-way travel time to measure absolute viscosity. Every CVI viscometer uses one of these sensors, which is key to running an efficient process since the same technology is utilized both in-line and in the lab.
